Universal washroom door controls: planning checklist

A washroom brief should explain how someone enters, establishes privacy, understands the room state and leaves. Record assistance and authorized override needs separately so the selected equipment supports each required function.

Start with how the room will be used

Identify whether the work concerns an existing shared washroom, a renovation or a new room. Provide the door swing and available layout, explain the current controls and name the facility contact who understands daily operation.

Door automation and the wider room layout are connected decisions. The owner’s designer or accessibility professional may need to review space, controls and the route alongside the door contractor’s work.

Write down the decisions for each function

FunctionInclude in the brief
EntryIntended activation location and what the person approaching should understand.
PrivacyHow privacy is requested, the lock arrangement and feedback to the occupant.
Occupancy feedbackWhich states are displayed and which controller signals determine them.
Leaving the roomThe intended exit operation and project-specific exceptional conditions.
AssistanceWhere a request is received, who responds and how it is acknowledged.

Coordinate the equipment as a system

Camden’s CX-WC product family illustrates a coordinated approach to restroom control components. A particular kit is still selected against the actual door and required functions; a catalogue package does not establish the design for every room.

Ask the project team to document the intended sequence and the responsibility for each interface. That gives installation and verification a common reference.

Include the facility response in handover

Staff need to understand the controls they will encounter and the procedure for an assistance request. Record the equipment supplied, the agreed operation and the appropriate service contact.

Use the universal washroom door service for a coordinated scope, or the wave-to-lock privacy page when the specific issue concerns the locking interaction. Final requirements depend on the project and jurisdiction.
